Acupuncture Shrinks Fibroids, Lowers Estrogen Levels

                                                 Estrogen Molecule

In the last post, I expressed a bit of dismay when my Gynecologist didn't show any type of surprise or relief towards the shrinking of my fibroids with the assistance of Acupuncture over the last 18 months. He actually dismissed the fact that Acupuncture had anything to do with the shrinkage I've been experiencing. Well, I know what has been going on with my body, and I want to prove him wrong in his assessment in that Acupuncture has nothing to do with the continued decrease in size. His diagnosis was that I was "probably" beginning menopause, and my body was naturally not producing as much estrogen.

I'm aware that during two different occasions of missing my Acupuncture sessions, the fibroids began to grow very fast. It took almost a month of reverting to my weekly  schedule to reduce the fibroids to the size they were before missing a few sessions in a row. In essence, if I hadn't jumped back into my weekly Acupuncture routine, the fibroids would have begun to infiltrate space in my upper abdominal/chest area. It was at that point of growth that I got a second opinion from another Gynecologist, and she was ready to get me scheduled with "prep" to have a hysterectomy within the following 3 to 5 months. That's when I researched, and subsequently began Acupuncture. Eighteen or so months later, the third Gynecologist didn't abruptly want to slap me on the operating table, but (not as strongly) suggested a total or partial hysterectomy, in addition to the option of "wait and see what happens"  and have another sonogram in 3 months. The results of the most recent sonogram (10/25/13) showed shrinkage of about 4-5cm ( which I believe was due to Acupuncture/herbals).

I began some more research to counter what the Western Doctor said with regard to the Eastern perspective of healing.

  •  Acupuncture can help reduce the size of fibroids, but it is more effective when it is         combined  with Chinese herbal medicine.
  • A combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine may make a fibroid disappear if it is very small (less than walnut-sized, 2-3 cm in diameter, but it could be larger).
  • If you have a large fibroid, a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine may reduce its size, but probably not to a large extent; however, the treatment can help prevent it from growing larger.
  • A combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can relieve symptoms caused by your fibroid(s) – heavy period, menstrual cramps, etc.
  • Lifestyle change and dietary change are also very important along with TCM treatment....

In addition, "....if you are interested in a noninvasive method of treatment, TCM is a good choice; however, it will not be instantaneous as healing the body naturally takes time." http://chiyuacupuncture.wordpress.com/author/chiyuacupuncture/

As far as the effects of Acupuncture on Estrogen are concerned, Maureen M. Conant, L.Ac explains:

"....acupuncture points are locations at the surface of the body, which send messages along channels (called ‘meridians’) that not only run along the skin, but also travel internally to provide nourishment to the muscles, joints, tendons, bones and internal organs. If there is a disruption in the flow of blood and energy along any of these channels, an imbalance occurs, leading to symptoms of illness. Stimulating the points with fine acupuncture needles helps to redirect the flow of blood and energy throughout the body to restore balance and health. In particular to the female hormonal system, acupuncture meridians connect the uterus with the kidneys, the heart and the brain which helps to explain the influence of mental thoughts and emotions on hormonal function and vice versa.
So, what does acupuncture do to your hormones in scientific terms? Current research shows that acupuncture treatment influences the production and circulation of hormones in the body. It also has an effect on endorphins (the ‘feel good’ chemicals in the brain), which are heavily linked to hormones and thus mood changes at different times in our cycle or different phases of our lives, such as pregnancy and menopause. In TCM terms, acupuncture regulates the flow of energy and substances in the body." http://www.fullbloomacupuncture.com/articles/balance-your-hormones.asp

As the Practitioner states above (in more professional terms than I), this is why I believe the Acupuncture has caused my fibroids to shrink. My body is being restored to a healthier state, and has been, in turn, induced a homeopathic state that has impacted my estrogen levels. The stress level I experienced at the time of consistent fibroid growth has lessened drastically, my diet is improved by cutting out as many estrogen-promoting foods, I meditate more, sleep more than 5 or 6 hours per night, drink lots of water, and exercise. These factors have contributed to internal and external balances in the way my body functions, and to the incredible degree of how effective the Acupuncture has been in shrinking my large fibroids. Check out the proof below:

This photo is from July, 2013. My abdomen was still a bit protrusive to the point where my panties couldn't fit over or up to my stomach.

This photo was taken on Oct., 2013. More flattening in the upper abdominal/rib cage area can be seen. I wore the same panties in this picture so that a better comparison can be viewed. The lower abdominal area is steadily decreasing, and the elastic from my panties is not as tight around
my stomach. Also, be aware that the protrusion from my fibroids is coming from my right side only. This seems to be the place of origin (according to my Practitioner) due to its concentration, and how long it has taken to soften, then slowly dissolve. My left side is actually flat. Most, if not all fibroids on my left side have shrunk.

Here are a few more facts and links researched from Professionals that I would like to share in relation to the effectiveness/benefits that Acupuncture offers for fibroids, as well as other gynecological conditions. One can gain better insight of how Acupuncture works:

It is suggested...."that the explanation for the reduced severity of hot flushes might be that acupuncture boosts the production of endorphins, which may stabilize the body's temperature controls
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/03/110307184640.htm

http://healthystuffu.com/natural-uterine-fibroid-treatment-with-acupuncture-chinese-herbs/

".....you can get pregnant faster and also prevent fibroids or endometriosis from growing back again (with Acupuncture). In my practice, I keep following up on those ladies who currently have fibroids or endometriosis, or had surgery for this condition. I have found that if hormone balance cannot be restored after surgery, fibroids and endometriosis will grow back very soon." Li Zheng, L.Ac.

"In Chinese Medicine, fibroid and endometriosis are associated with blood stasis and phlegm condition. You may try to eat food to release blood stasis: kelp, lemons, limes, onions, Irish moss, bladder wrack, and linseed oil, which has omega-3, a natural blood thinner...."  Li Zheng, L.Ac.

"The cause of uterine fibroids are unknown, but it is known that estrogens, especially estradiol (E2), promote their growth. Dr. Northup, MD states that estrogen dominance can be attributable to the
stress hormones such as epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol."

Acupuncture Results to Shrink Fibroids Dismissed by MD

Go West or East?
Deciding Which Medical Path to Take

On yesterday I visited with a new Gynecologist (3rd one) in order to gain another opinion/recommendation about more that could be done regarding my fibroids, as well as my regular wellness exam.  After extensive conversation about symptoms, discomfort, heavy bleeding (of which I have none), I mentioned and showed the Doctor how much of a reduction I had experienced from doing the 16 months I had been undergoing weekly Acupuncture. Due to my age, he expressed that I was within the range of experiencing the beginning effects of menopause (which is decreased estrogen production), and....."that was the reason my fibroids were shrinking, not the Acupuncture". I was a little miffed when I heard him say this, as I knew these things:

  • My large fibroids began to show shrinkage within the first two weeks of  undergoing Acupuncture.
  • During two periods when I skipped Acupuncture sessions, the fibroids grew and became harder. It took almost a month to get on track to the shrinkage level accomplished before.
  • Every week there is a distinct degree of shrinkage and softening of the remaining fibroid masses.
  • Pictures shown throughout this blog, in addition to comments from friends who've noticed that I've "lost weight" attest to the fibroid shrinkage I've undergone over the last 16 month.

There seemingly was no room for the Doctor to consider that an alternative method that has been practiced for centuries could have a real affect on my fibroid situation.

Based on the empirical evidence above, conversely, I'd have to dismiss the MD's claim that Acupuncture is not the reason my fibroids are shrinking. Acupuncture, for me has shown an obvious, direct effect on my shrinking fibroids. Without it, they grow very fast. With that said, I would have to connect the dots from Acupuncture to estrogen levels and  a possible relationship between the two, instead of menopause to further support the belief that the Acupuncture is to be credited for fibroid shrinkage. I am not sure at what rate my body may be decreasing in estrogen production. Clearly, some more research and a follow-up is needed.

After my exam, I was directed to schedule a sonogram with the RN on staff, and the Doctor said he would check to ensure that "things were stable".  Unlike the other (2) Gynecologists I had previously seen, this one didn't immediately bark "You need to have a hysterectomy to get rid of the fibroids", which was refreshing. Instead, he explained that the prior hysterectomy recommendations I'd received resulted in the preventative measures for Ovarian Cancer. As the fibroids grow, they may hide what is happening to the uterus, and once Ovarian Cancer is discovered, it could be to late, or dire circumstances would prevail. (It would have been nice if my other Gynecologists would  have articulated this to me.)

Interestingly enough, the Doctor mentioned nothing else about the Acupuncture. I kinda thought he would be a bit curious - heck I was ready to give him the web address to my blog so he could see the results that have occurred over time for himself. But  he is the trained professional, not me. I didn't want to force my opinion of seeking an alternative method to shrink my large fibroids. I chose this Doctor because of his training and expertise.  Who am I to disagree or contradict what he says according to the dictates of Western medicine. However, the results I've received from the Acupuncture, a technique used from Traditional Chinese Medicine is has been safe, non-invasive, convenient AND effective.

After the sonogram next week, we will be able to see how much shrinkage has occurred over the last year. Remember, I started out with fibroids measuring up to 16cm! I am excited to see how small they measure now. Also, with a fresher perspective from a new Doctor, I will find out if a hysterectomy or other procedure is indeed necessary at this point.....until then, I will continue with my weekly Acupuncture sessions.

Shrink Fibroids by Detoxing

First Line of Defense to Shrink Fibroids - Detoxing

Uterine fibroids result as an imbalance that disrupts the normal function of the Reproductive System. In addition to the various methods employed to address shrinkage, and eventual recovery from uterine fibroids, detoxing the body is one of the best, initial things that can be done. Due to the toxic internal environment of the body (as well as environmental factors), fibroids are manifested  and continue to grow as the body continually strives towards homeostasis.

The following factors have been cited (through personal research) as the reasons/causes for fibroid formations:

  • Heredity (it may run in the family)
  • Estrogen dominance (which can occur right before perimenopause)
  • Excessive intake of caffeine
  • High levels of stress
  • Poor diet/lack of exercise (eating lots of meat, foods high in fat, cholesterol, salt and sugar, as well as processed foods)
  • High levels of stress
  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • Smoking
  • Use of illicit drugs (narcotics, stimulants, depressants, and  hallucinogens. (Cannabis is included as an illicit drug, although I would have to argue against this one based on its healing and restorative properties)
  • Exposure to high levels of pollutants, environmental contaminants, and preservatives found in foods, soaps, shampoos, lotions, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals (i.e. parabens)
  • Stifled creativity that has not been unleashed or realized (goals, life objectives, stagnancy in a job or relationship)
  • Insecurity about sexual identity
  • Unrealized desires to have a baby

Making an attempt to clean out your internal system and restore order is needed to 'jump start' your body on the path to healing itself, in turn, shrinking the fibroids.

Steps of detoxing your system if you have fibroids:

  1. Clean your colon
  2. Clean your liver
  3. Clean your kidneys
  4. Restore uterus to a healthier state/uterine toning
  5. Restore a homeostatic environment internally
Please click on the links for steps 1-4 to understand how and why detoxing of these organs are important. It is essential to know that you should discuss these steps with your Doctor before trying. In many cases, not all steps may be necessary for YOU, specifically.

As far as step as step 5 is concerned, restoring a homeostatic environment internally on a general level would include:
  • altering your diet (consuming organic foods/juices whenever possible is best, eat lean meats and lots of veggies)
  • increasing water intake (divide weight in half and drink that amount in ounces of water daily to make sure you are adequately hydrated)
  • implementing a weekly exercise routine (3-4 times each week, or 180 minutes of brisk walking per week)
  • making time during the day or night to do deep breathing exercises (oxygen helps in restoring optimal function and rejuvenation to cells and organs)
  • meditation (offers mind-body realignment, helps to put chakras in balance, and alleviate stress)

Feel free to check out my personal weekend detox plan here.

In addition, check out these detox plans by Dr. Oz:

     Dr. Oz's 48 hour cleanse
     3-Day Detox Cleanse

I recommend these plans because they don't leave the body depleted of necessary nutrients (like the molasses-cayenne pepper tea can, for example), the fruits/herbs/vegetables/juices used don't cost much (many items you may already have in the fridge or in the pantry), and they don't leave you feeling weak as you continue to function normally on a daily basis.

For some intermittent detoxing, try Dr. Oz's recipes for:
detox smoothie
acai berry detox
detox soup
detox tea

You may also find that after you begin your preferred method of detoxing, you will lose some extra weight (which, for many of us is a nice added benefit).

Remember: 'put the good stuff in your body to get the bad stuff out of your body'.

*********Please consult your Doctor before beginning any detox plan.

Continued Success: Acupuncture Shrinks Fibroids

Its been a total of sixteen months that I have undergone Moxibustion Acupuncture to shrink my large fibroids.

On yesterday, I had a routine weekly session, and  asked the Doctor to take a follow-up picture of the current progress (see below). Also, during the last week I noticed a softening on the right, lower side of my abdomen, which is where the largest fibroid mass is located. I'm completely excited about that due to the time it has taken to get that mass down versus others that had developed along the left side. Those have almost disappeared.

If you are suffering with uterine fibroids, or trying to shrink them, read about ALL methods that can be applied. Surgery, having a hysterectomy is not the only answer. Be sure to consult with your Doctor before deciding on a course of action, and taking any supplement or medicine that you read about  to help your situation. Not all things are good for all people.

Acupuncture Offers Benefits of the Best Medicine - Laughter

As I have entrusted my health and healing of fibroids to Acupuncture, it is by no means a laughing matter, as it has proven to be successful for me with shrinking my large fibroids. That, indeed is serious stuff. However, the comedic thread that compliments Acupuncture comes from the procedure.

In short, the procedure includes my getting on a hospital cot and laying supine while the Acupuncturist strategically inserts 6 inch needles into my abdominal area, my hands and feet. There are 20 insertions made altogether. Then, with the assistance of an Acu Machine. Electrodes with tiny heads extend from the bottom knobs and are clamped on to each inserted needle......

The Acu Machine produces very low volts of electricity that is conducted through the wires to the needles, which produces rigorous vibrations from my stomach. As the whole Acupuncture session lasts 30 to 40 minutes, the vibrations begins to slow down. By the time the Doctor comes in to check on me, my body is calm, relaxed and at peace inside and out.

It is said 'a picture is worth a thousand words': so I know after seeing the picture above, you probably can churn out a few funny metaphors or similes that apply to the content. From day one of beginning my Acupuncture regimen, I have laughed, chuckled to myself, and been able to make some funny parodies to family and friends. My 'Frankenstein' reference is always cute.

The conversation I had with my Dad last night prompted me to write this particular blog post:

As my Dad and I wound down our phone conversation last night, I happened to mention that I had my scheduled appointment with Dr. Lu on today. He commented by saying, "so you're going to play like a dart board tomorrow...". We both laughed wholeheartedly, because the term "dart board" elevated me from the "pin cushion" realm that my Mother bequeathed on me. Honestly, my Parents kind of freaked when they saw the pictures as I started this blog. They kept asking, "Does it hurt? It looks painful". I assured them that Dr. Lu was skilled with his implementation of the pins, and I don't feel any pain. Many times, I don't even flinch while he's 'pinning' me.

The terms humorously applied to my Acupuncture procedure have been:

'Getting roasted today?'
'Are you gonna have shock treatment?'
'I've got a sticky situation to attend'
'I'm getting pinned today'
'I've just had a shocking experience'
Bride of Frankenstein
Pin cushion
Jellyfish
Porcupine
etc.

As these and other little terms seep into my conversation, it tickles me, and makes whomever else I'm with laugh, especially if they know nothing about Acupuncture. And here's where the added benefit comes in: the laughter that Acupuncture promotes from this standpoint aids in the healing process. Of course, I'm not existing daily with the need to make continuous comedic references to my procedure, but when I do, it's funny. The laughter in turn, does so many good things for you, overall.

Laughter's Effects on the Body

"In the last few decades, researchers have studied laughter's effects on the body and turned up some potentially interesting information on how it affects us:
  • Blood flow. Researchers at the University of Maryland studied the effects on blood vessels when people were shown either comedies or dramas. After the screening, the blood vessels of the group who watched the comedy behaved normally -- expanding and contracting easily. But the blood vessels in people who watched the drama tended to tense up, restricting blood flow.
  • Immune response. Increased stress is associated with decreased immune system response, says Provine. Some studies have shown that the ability to use humor may raise the level of infection-fighting antibodies in the body and boost the levels of immune cells, as well.
  • Blood sugar levels. One study of 19 people with diabetes looked at the effects of laughter on blood sugar levels. After eating, the group attended a tedious lecture. On the next day, the group ate the same meal and then watched a comedy. After the comedy, the group had lower blood sugar levels than they did after the lecture.
  • Relaxation and sleep. The focus on the benefits of laughter really began with Norman Cousin's memoir, Anatomy of an Illness. Cousins, who was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a painful spine condition, found that a diet of comedies, like Marx Brothers films and episodes of Candid Camera, helped him feel better. He said that ten minutes of laughter allowed him two hours of pain-free sleep.
We change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse and blood pressure go up, and we breathe faster, sending more oxygen to our tissues".

So, if you research, consider and decide to use Acupuncture as a means to heal, know that you will be able to laugh your way to good health in the process....sometimes I laugh when I'm in the midst of the procedure as I look down on my stomach and sea a little 'army' of pins shaking around....it's funny to me - definitely a different experience. With the current success I have had with Acupuncture, the 'laugh factor' is an added benefit.

Sticking to Your Acupuncture Sessions

Pardon the pun in the title, but with this subject I just couldn't resist...."sticking" and "acupuncture"....do you get it?  Anyway, with this brief, yet important post, I wanted to highlight the importance of attending every and all Acupuncture sessions that your Practitioner suggests is sufficient to help in the healing/curing of whatever ailment. In my case of shrinking fibroids, it has been 15 months of treatment I have received up to this point, and I am consistently getting results.  My fibroids were more than 16 cm in size when I began Acupuncture treatments. Now, I have a little protrusion in my lower abdomen towards my right side. However, I can fit comfortably into my size 8 jeans once again, and see straight down to my feet.

During the last year, I can recall when I missed a few sessions due to some last minute coverage I had to extend with work, I definitely saw and felt a difference in the hardness and size of the fibroids. The Non-invasive Moxibustion Acupuncture that my Doctor uses with me works to break up blood stasis, or stagnation so that there is better circulation and flow in the uterine area. As the fibroids 'break up' or break apart, I can literally feel that they get softer, then dissolve in certain areas. When I went intermittently or missed a couple of session in December, the hardness returned, and my pants started feeling tighter. It took almost a month of jumping back on track with my weekly appointments just to return to the progress that had been attained up to November. Since then, I have not missed.

Going once weekly has not been any infringement on my time. I go on the same day every week (one of my consistent off days), and do a ritual before and after my session that enhances the acupuncture experience, itself.

Always keep your Acupuncture appointment, and if you can, go the same day at the same time every week. You want to keep the momentum of the healing process going.*  The routine is good for the mind and the body, and I believe it aids with the continuous shrinkage with my fibroids. Toxins are being pulled out of my body with the use of Acupuncture,  along with consistent stimulation from the acupuncture needles and the low dosages of electricity that flow through them during each session, the fibroids are steadily shrinking.

*Not everyone can undergo Acupuncture, nor will those who can have the same results I have experienced.

Positive Results of Acupuncture to Shrink Fibroids - Status Report

Picture taken in May, 2012 before Acupuncture

Picture taken last week August 15, 2013

In this post, I wanted to show the up to date progress results  I've experienced using Acupuncture to shrink my fibroids. It's been a year and three months since I've first begun Acupuncture. In addition, I began taking Iodine (liquid kelp) every two to three days, Vitamins B Complex, E, D, Panax Ginseng and Milk Thistle. The Doctor also started me back on the Xue Fu Zhu Yu  Wan herbals, which I don't take during menstruation.

The lower portion of my abdomen which faces the camera is the area where the last major mass of fibroids is located, and has been a bit stubborn and slow in deteriorating. However, it gets measurably softer after each session. Although I have been putting on a little weight overall, the size of my abdomen isn't increasing.

Thus far, the Acupuncture has significantly reduced the size of my large fibroid tumors. At the onset of the sessions, my Doctor was honest and told me he hadn't ever treated anyone with fibroids the size of mine. However, my body/the fibroids responded to the Moxibustion Acupuncture technique within the first two weeks, and has continued to respond up to this day.

Some other herbal supplements that I am currently researching to speed up the rate at which my fibroids are shrinking include: Dong Quai, Red Clover and Hemp Oil.  These three supplements have come up frequently in some things I've read regarding fibroids as of late, and I figured it wouldn't hurt to do some investigation on their affects on shrinking/dissolving fibroids.....stay tuned.

Complimentary Measures For Shrinking Fibroids

Today's post is to address a nice comment and questions asked by someone that visited this blog on July 25, 2013:

"..... Wonderful to know acupuncture is working for you. (1) Could you tell me your Acupuncturist's name? Also the (2) yoga poses and the (3) fast-- do you have more info (links) like how many servings of (4) lemon and water and (5) ACV etc.? Also have you done (6) colonics?"

1. My Acupuncturist is located in Fort Worth, TX. His name is Dr. Po-Chu Lu of China Acupuncture Clinic, 3740 University Dr., Ste. 203. The contact number is (817) 924-8888, and  the office is open 6 days each week (which allows for convenient Saturday morning appointments).

2. Yoga poses

In a recent post, I mentioned that I researched some other, complimentary measures for shrinking fibroids as recommended/suggested by health professionals. Yoga, which is known to offer benefits of mental, spiritual and physical balance can definitely work as a compliment to Acupuncture, whether its being done to shrink fibroids, or address any other health problems. Here is a link to poses  I use to increases circulation in the lower abdominal region, and to cut off blood circulation to the fibroids themselves. Also, take a look at this link regarding deep breathing exercises.

3. Fasts

Although the exact cause of fibroids is not known, one of the contributing factors for their formation is excessive toxins that have built up over time in the body. The liver is essential for clearing these toxins out of our bodies. When it doesn't work properly, the toxins it tries to filter out of the body become reabsorbed, thereby causing the system to safeguard/protect itself. These safeguards manifest into fibroids. When one goes through a fast, the body has to reach into energy reserves (fat stores) in order to keep on working efficiently. After doing this for a period of time, the body may begin to lose weight. Even though toxins are expelled from the body by sweating and usual trips to the bathroom, a short-term (and intermittent) fast has been said to been be beneficial.
I usually do a 24 to 30 hour fast between Saturday and Sunday.......

4. (Cont'd)....... I drink hot water and lemon only during this time. Lemons are acidic, however when drunk with water offers alkalizing properties for the internal system. After completing the fast, I eat both soups, protein and salads for the first few meals. Then I maneuver back into my regular diet. I also drink 2 - 2 1/2 33oz bottles of water every day.

5. ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar)

Over the last 3 years of dealing with my fibroid situation, I have come across numerous articles and testimonials from women who have given credence to using ACV to shrink fibroids. In some places, it is actually says "Apple Cider Vinegar dissolves fibroids". It may be true if done over a period of time, but I haven't seen any actual studies to support this. I do, however, take a shot of ACV about twice each week in order to help flush fat from my system, and I alternate it with other vinegars I use for my salad dressings (I use EVOO, Canola and Grape seed oils).

6. Colonics

I do not subscribe to colonics. Personally, since I am 'regular' and eat healthily, I don't feel I need to give my colon an overdrive with a colonic. It is a great way to help cleanse and re-set the body, however, it is not for me. I'll let my colon do its thing, naturally.

I pray the answers and information  I've offered to this commenter's topics will help.

Results of Using Acupuncture to Shrink Fibroids

My decision to use Acupuncture as a non-invasive means to shrink my fibroids has proven to be a good one. The picture above was taken today, July 18, 2013. Thus far, it has taken a approximately 14 months to shrink my fibroids that initially measured over 16cm before Acupuncture treatments. At this time, I have resumed taking the herbal supplement Xue Fu Zhu Yu Wan  once, daily.  I began taking this supplement 3 times daily (8 pills per) at the onset of my treatments, however it proved to be a bit strong for my system. My Doctor recommended decreasing the dosage, then to stop taking them altogether after about 4 months into treatment because it caused me to have extended menstrual periods.  Fibroid shrinkage has continually occurred, and  I've just begun to resume the herbal regimen once, daily. It actually seems to support further shrinkage with the treatments as the fibroids have gotten smaller. My Doctor has also told me within the next month or so that he will be decreasing my treatments to once every two weeks, as opposed to weekly.  I have not suffered any adverse effects thus far, and as I've begun the early stages of menopause, I haven't had any periods.  At this point, I would honestly say I'm in the 85% - 87% realm of fibroid shrinkage recovery.  The goal is to not only shrink the fibroids, but to get rid of them altogether. I believe this will be possible with continued Acupuncture treatments.

Based on additional research, I have recently employed a once-a- week detox over the course of Saturday through Sunday of drinking nothing but hot water and lemon, taking 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, and doing deep breathing exercises and yoga exercises that increase blood circulation in my lower abdominal/uterine area (I actually do these exercises every other day).  I do the detox to support my liver and kidneys, as well as keep the insides alkalized (maintaining the body's pH balance).  Although some of the Yoga stretches are a bit strenuous, I feel really good and rejuvenated afterwards. Once my work schedule calms down (by beginning of August), I plan to start a consistent workout regimen. I haven't up to this time because of the long work hours, and the fact that my job is already physically demanding - continuous walking, bending and lifting (I am a Supervisor in a busy restaurant). After a 9 to 11-hour day of work, the last thing I want to do is workout!  On my off days, I simply have to rest.

Certain Yoga exercises have been said to help with shrinking fibroids because it increase blood circulation in the uterine area, as well as the other body parts. One must remember that when the flow of 'energy' is blocked in one area of the body, it may affect other parts, as well (this is part of the basic principle of Acupuncture, and one of the reasons I chose to do it to shrink my fibroids).  I would suggest for those who have fibroids, especially smaller ones, to consider beginning a mid to high  impact aerobic routine at least 3 times per week (based on what I've read).  Building up a good sweat helps the body to release toxins that are/can be part of the cause for fibroid formation. In addition, exercise is a win-win situation for anybody, as it promotes better, overall health. In addition, my diet has been great, as I eat tons of veggies (raw and steamed for the most part), lots of fish, seafood, chicken, grains, fresh fruits and nuts. I eat lean meat occasionally, and may mix things up a bit with turkey, lamb, and liver.  Honestly, a few fried items may pass my lips, but not much (sometimes I'll grab a few fries or onion rings out of the kitchen when I'm getting plates together off of the line at work, or share a fried appetizer if I go out to eat). However, I can literally count the times  during the course of a month when I eat fried foods, and going to a Fast Food joint is out of the question. I don't have a sweet tooth, but I do love the grape juice! I've cut back drastically on the amount of wine I drink to a few times each week, as opposed to having a couple (or more) glasses on a daily basis. I drink 2 - 2 1/2 liters of water each day to maintain optimal hydration. I have also slowed down my cigarette smoking, but still working on completely ceasing (my next Birthday is in 3 weeks, and I am aiming to be smoke-free by, or before then).

***The suggestions I've made in this post are simply that - suggestions. If you suffer with uterine fibroids, PLEASE CONSULT AND FOLLOW THE ADVICE/SUGGESTIONS OF YOUR OWN DOCTOR OR PRACTITIONER. These things have been successful for me, and my body.

Acupuncture Side Effects

The thought of having needles stuck in 20 different parts of your body in order to heal yourself may come off as sadistic, scary, and even gross. How uncivilized! How barbaric! I admit to being a bit nervous when I saw the 6 inch needles during my first Acupuncture session. But I just took a deep breath and let the Doctor do his thing. Needless to say by still being a consistent patient, I was impressed with the skill and precision he used to place the needles at specific acupoints  WITHOUT pain. I did consistent research on what was being done, and what to expect as the stasis began to break up. Also, asking the Doctor one million and one questions during each visit made/makes the whole Acupuncture procedure rather enjoyable.

Now, you know from going through this blog, or even the highlighted link in the prior paragraph that Acupuncture has caused my large fibroids to shrink. I have felt good, energized, increased my meal and water intake, and feel generally healthy. I've even gained some weight which has helped me to fill out a bit.

As far as any negative side effects, I can't account for any from Acupuncture. However, I have one side effect from my insurance company - they recently decreased the amount covered for my sessions! As I understand the way the insurance works, I was allowed so many sessions that would be paid for by them. Now, I have to pay  the difference. Ouch.

As the fibroids are greatly diminished, the course of action as outlined by my Acupuncturist is to slow down the treatments as continued shrinkage occurs. So, I'll be paying more for each session (above the amount of my co-pay), but going less frequently. I guess I should be grateful that the insurance picked up what it did! But with $160 (plus taxes) that has been going out of each paycheck for the last five years, and considering this is the first time (other than vision and dental) that I've had to use my insurance for a long-term treatment,  I'm still looking for a financial reprieve!

Does Acupuncture Shrink Uterine Fibroids? Yes

I have been undergoing Acupuncture for the last year, and have had success with my fibroids shrinking substantially - up to 75% - 79%. Proof is in the pictures below:

Comparisons:

Then.............................................................................Now
(a year ago, before Acupuncture)                (after one year of Acupuncture)

Acupuncture has been criticized as not being a verifiable way to cure or heal the body. It is regarded as a shamanistic-type practice, and does not show enough proof of effectiveness through recorded trials to be  taken seriously. Well, take a look at the pictures, and you decide if you think the reduction in size (fibroid shrinkage) of my abdomen is real or not.  The measured size of my fibroid cluster before Acupuncture was the 16cm, and steadily growing/spreading. Pressure that the fibroids placed on my organs, namely my bladder is gone. I can see 'myself' when I look down, as opposed to a protruding belly. My clothes fit comfortably, and I am not  wearing any more over-sized shirts to hide my mid section. People I encounter regularly have consistently asked me if I'm dieting.

Some articles I've come across with the continuous research I do have offered Acupuncture as something akin to a placebo effect. If so, would the physical changes with fibroid shrinkage have occurred? (It's all in my mind!) I honestly went into the realm of Acupuncture with an open mind. I did nothing different in my lifestyle to possibly bolster the effects that Acupuncture could or would produce. I didn't know if it would work, or not. Nor do I believe with the research I had done that I was completely convinced that Acupuncture would work. I kept an open mind, spirit and positive heart. It so happened it did work. After the first session my body began to respond. I could feel the fibroid clusters in various spots begin to soften.

Question: Does Acupuncture shrink fibroids?

Answer: Yes

Fibroids - A Closer Look

As I continue with my weekly Acupuncture regimen, I am intrigued with delving into this 'Menopausal stage' through which I have been riding. I did some more research that I'd like to share  in this post. If nothing else, you will KNOW something that you didn't before:

Fibroid tumors are sensitive to changes in a woman's monthly hormone cycle. As estrogen levels tend to increase before menopause starts, many uterine fibroids start to grow. This may make the symptoms worse. After menopause, estrogen falls dramatically. This causes the fibroids to shrink (although they probably won't totally disappear) and the symptoms to diminish. If a woman is taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT), however, she will probably not experience a shrinking of the fibroids or a lessening of the symptoms.

Recommended advice from 'Dr. McLucas' of http://www.fibroids.com/news-blog/2010/06/fibroids-menopause/:

"..... the best time to treat fibroids that are causing painful symptoms like heavy bleeding, frequent urination, back ache or leg pains, is right now. “If you’re in your late 40s, you are also in what amounts to an ‘estrogen bath,’ ” Dr. McLucas said. He added that right before menopause, when estrogen is removed from the body as the ovaries stop , women will experience several months or years of estrogen dominated menstrual cycles. Since fibroids are estrogen sensitive, there is almost always a growth spurt for fibroids."  This influx of estrogen caused a  growth spurt with the fibroids, resulting beyond 16cm (at least the biggest one of the cluster). After reading about the hysterectomy procedure, I felt there was time to seek out  another way to address shrinking my fibroids.  My fibroids were huge! But I couldn't fathom going under the knife.  Settling for  my 'Frankenstein' pose (see below) is sufficient....and it works.

This is an example of what goes on during my Acupuncture session....with the low dosages of electricity that I feel through the needles, I really DO feel a bit Frankenstein-ish and experimental! Needless to say, I chuckle to myself throughout my session, as I let my imagination wander, and think back to the old black and white version of
Frankenstein with Boris Karloff - classic!

Does Acupuncture Cause Premature Menopause?

My curiosity in exploring some connections (if any) as to why I would even be dealing with Menopause as I'm working on shrinking my fibroids was revved. I began entering some keywords in the browser, and set back and read....  Was there a connection? More specifically, was the Acupuncture causing me to go into (what I believed at the time) a premature Menopausal state? (I found being 45yrs. old put me right in the ballpark age range as to when Menopause starts....now when it stops, is a another blog.

Does Acupuncture cause Menopause?

With a back track in memory, approximately 2 years ago, I went through a stage of night sweats for about 2-3 weeks. I don't re-call any hot flashes, or unusually flushed episodes during this time. I was working a lot and going through final exams. I also remember money was a bit stressed, and my job was causing me utter depression (toxic environment). The night sweats  went away, and I hadn't thought twice about them....until March (2013) when the heat flashes began to set in at work. I  thought I still had a way to go before reaching the Menopause door - it just came up abruptly in my face!

 Brief Aside:

As you may have read in the prior post, I stumbled upon using a supplement to essentially give some support with my fibroids, and it turned out it also cured my hot flashes and night sweats. Killing two birds with one stone is always a good way to go.

I must stress that it is important to educate yourself about your health - the human body, and how it works. Researching an affliction or problem in addition to seeing a trained Medical Professional can allow a more pro-active, safer, and/or alternative means to be treated, and heal because you KNOW.  If I didn't pay the attention I do to my body, how it works, didn't read, etc.,  I would not have probably been using the supplement in the first place.

      Deduction:

The night sweats I experienced two years ago were probably related to the stress I was dealing with at the time, as opposed to an onset of early menopause.

      Facts:

   - I had no disruptions with my cycle until I began Acupuncture (May, 2012). This was caused by the frequency at which I was taking the herbal compliment prescribed by my Acupuncturist. Once I decreased dosage, my cycle jumped a regular schedule, but became lighter each month.

   - I increased my daily intake of water to  2 to 2 1/2 33.8oz btls. It's been making feel wonderful.

   - Work level decreased from insane to tolerable, so stress level at work was lower, and I were to the point of being able to laugh more at the blunders of what was going on at the circus we called 'the Job'.

   - The Acupuncture was steadily shrinking my fibroids, but was also putting balance into other areas: my body was detoxing a lot of toxins in the form of shrinking the fibroids, my liver and kidneys were getting a nice flushing, and I ate/eat a more vegetable based diet. The fibroids were disappearing. So I couldn't make a connection that the Acupunture could induce menopause, whether prematurely, or otherwise.  With some additional research, I found (not surprisingly) that Acupuncture has been used to assist with the effects of hot flashes and night sweats during Menopause, as well as vaginal dryness. It is highly possible that my Menopausal symptoms/effects were as moderate as they were (compared to some I've seen, and those  to whom I've spoken) due to the Acupuncture. However, it is speculated based on the positive aspects that Acupuncture has provided for Menopausal women.  And, I can give personal testament to no negative effects suffered after my sessions.

Conclusion

I guess my body was ready to do its thing, and CHANGE.  I'm glad to have found a way to get relief from the flashes and sweats, as I was shrinking my fibroids and dealing with Menopause at the same time.  What are the odds of that?  Needless to say, a pretty interesting mental/emotional/physical ride, all at once. Thus far, the Menopause symptoms have ceased, and the last cluster of fibroids remaining is getting softer.

Cure For Hot Flashes

Within the last 4 months, my body has been gradually going into a menopausal state - that is, I've been getting the dreaded hot flashes by day and miserable sweats at night. As I am still undergoing Acupuncture treatments to shrink my fibroids, I wondered if there was a connection:

Could the Acupuncture treatments be 'forcing' my body into menopause? Or, was this just the time for it to happen?

I'm  45 yrs. old, and when looking at my Mother and Grandmother's time of 'life change', it was too soon. As I am still trying to research if there is a connection, I had to find an immediate remedy to the hot flashes. They were making me feel as though I was losing my mind! They would just come over me in a swell. At work, everyone knew I when I had one because I announced it like an alarm. The men I worked with just looked at me in wonder as I would burst out into a sweat during a conversation. The ladies basically said 'Welcome to the Club'. At night, I would get up three or four times to change sheets and night shirts.  I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep, stay up for hours and read or look at a movie, then try to get a nap in before it was actually time for me to wake up. For several weeks I went through this, talking to various women about their experiences with the hot flashes, and how they found relief.  I began eating ice whenever I felt a flash come on. That helped, but it took a few minutes for my body temperature to even out. I also took a few seconds to stand in the walk-in freezer in the kitchen at work, but was always afraid that I would cause myself a cold due to the extreme cold and my intensely hot, sweating body - not a good mix. So, I stopped doing that and just resorted to the ice therapy.

My Mother (and Father) suggested that I do Hormone Replacement Therapy,
as it had worked successfully for both of them. I had a bit of fear with using a patch, and I wanted to explore some other, more natural alternatives for relief. Looking at the root cause of hot flashes, I found that there is an imbalance in the hypothalamus caused when there is a decrease in the production of estrogen. As the hypothalamus is what regulates body temperature, the imbalance causes blood vessels to constrict and expand at such a rate that one feels a 'flush' or 'flash'. I also did some research with regards to the thyroid gland, because I was experiencing chills sporadically. With more research into these two body parts, I came upon an interesting video by Dr. David Brownstein who spoke extensively about the thyroid gland, how he cured his own Father by helping him correct his thyroid function, and his integrative approach to healing.  From my own research and practice, I used Iodine along with my herbal teas and molasses 'routine' in an effort to shrink my fibroids before beginning Acupuncture
to support my uterus. Although it had been some time since I had taken any Iodine (Liquid Kelp), after seeing the video I didn't think it could hurt. I plucked about 5 drops of the Liquid Kelp under my tongue, and resumed life.  That night, I slept without having a night sweat, but was so tired when I did go to bed, I hadn't noticed until a few days later. Also, at work I wasn't making my intermittent announcements of 'hot flash coming on!' I was feeling fine. A co-worker asked me how were my flashes coming along, as she had suggested a product she used that seemed to help. My response was that I was feeling good, not  noticeably sweating as I had been, and the "eureka!" moment when I told her...."I've been able to sleep through the night". When I said this, I realized something I must have done differently had caused this reversion to normalcy. But, what was it? What did I do? I just figured it out right before making this post:

The Iodine (liquid kelp) is what cured my hot flashes!

I just finished some pre-lim surfing on the Internet regarding the effects of Iodine on hot flashes. Based on studies that have been done, what has been offered as testimonials by other women, and what I've experienced, I can say with confidence that after taking Iodine one time, my hot flashes and night sweats have disappeared! I take 5 sub-lingual drop every two three days, and have not had a re-occurrence of hot flashes since - its been three weeks.

I'll post a follow-up of continued or changed effects at the end of June. Stay tuned, and see what happens. In the mean time, if you decide to employ Iodine (Liquid Kelp) as a nutritional supplement,
to help you with hot flashes, check with your physician first. You may not need Iodine, but an over-abundance can cause a serious problem, just as a deficiency.
